The amazing new 9th Bridge School
Recently I was invited to take a tour with some local bloggers, around an amazing new 9th Bridge School, part of the Downtown Project to revitalize Downtown Las Vegas.
The building, located near Fremont District, used to be an old church. Upon walking in, one would assume it was like any other school. Classrooms, meeting areas, playground. But going in further, you see that it is a place where children not only learn, but experience life as well. There are no rows of desks, no teacher at the chalkboard and no closed ended lesson plans.
We had our first tour of the school by a small boy with a big mind and bubbling personality. He told us everything they were learning and how anything they did was a fun learning experience. There were sensory areas, block areas and he even told us about how building a tunnel of blocks, took a knowledge of math and science, without even realizing it.
Their mission: To transform education by redefining the experience of school, can be seen in every room, every teacher and in the bright, attentive, eager to learn eyes of every student there.
The school is becoming successful in creating a learning environment that not only focuses on cognitive learning and language skills, but also how to interact with your community, with your peers and those you may interact with outside school. This also includes plans for a large garden, to promote and learn about sustainability.
The community also helps contribute to the school, with things like playground donations and public speakers for the kids, such as parents that have cool jobs or people in the community such as artists.
This was, personally, something I would love to have my children in. Student guided learning has ben proven time and again to be quite effective, especially when they venture out on their own into the real world.
**Waived application fee for enrollment when they mention 9thBridge2014. Offer expires 1/5/2015**

It's that time of the year! 2014 A Year In Review.
My 2014
Well, this year was pretty great. For the most part.
I turned 38 in February. A feat in itself (for those that know me, they know my mother died suddenly at age 37, so this made me a little apprehensive to grow any older than 36!)
In March my Syster, Lisa came up. We played tourist on the strip and went to see Tracy Lawrence at the Smith Center, along with a meet and greet. We also got matching BFF tattoos.
April brought Coachella and music, food and art awesomeness. Of course, I missed bumping into a couple Skarsgårds by a few hours. Just my luck!! I will see you in 2016 Coachella! Can't wait!!
June I went to Arizona and visited my Syster. It was my first time in Arizona and I loved it! We had a blast! My friends in Canada, who I have known for about 12 years but just met for the first time, came to Las Vegas. I played tour guide including Gold & Silver Pawn, where 3 of my kids met the amazing Chum and Downtown Fremont Street.
July was the highlight of my year, I think! I was invited by Hemlock Grove to attend the Season 2 Premier at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood, California. I brought one of my friends and met a few more from the page I run, Bill Skarsgård News. It was the most amazing day ever. Bill was a sweetheart, as were the rest of the cast.
At the end of July was San Diego Comic Con. I went with my Syster and another friend, and even though we did not have passes for the convention center, we enjoyed all the outside festivities, including the Vikings Experience.
September brought the Cosmopolitan rooftop and 30 Seconds To Mars. Such an amazing concert!
October brought the second year of Life Is Beautiful and another year of volunteering for this amazing music and art festival. They certainly topped last year! Can't wait for LIB 2015!
November was my second year trying National Novel Writing Month. Last year I only got to 7,000 words, but this year I won topping out at 50,007! My story is still not done but I am taking a break.
Here is to another amazing 2015! Hopefully there will be even better things to come in the new year!

On The Subject Of Biting
On the subject of biting, which is a normal toddler behavior, there were several questions posed at from several frustrated mamas over at Mamapedia. So I decided to give my own advice on the subject, having dealt with it for quite a long time!!
Biting, hitting, yelling: all of these behaviors can be seen in any toddler classroom, playdate, or other extra cirricular activity involving young children who are not yet verbally expressive. Most teachers and parents try their hardest to avoid these instances, but when you have 8 to 10 18 month to 2 year olds in one room, it can be pretty hard to avoid every instance.
It seems that the biggest problem occurs when a child wants a toy another child has, or wants the attention of an adult otherwise pre-occupied. The child gets frustrated, and the fangs come out! The child then takes this opportunity and chomps down.
This does not mean the child is destined to be a cannibal, or that they have a violent streak. This is merely their way of communicating. But there is a way to attempt to lessen the instances of accident reports, angry parents, and banning from playdates, get togethers, and Kindermusik sessions!
Research has indicated that infants and toddlers who can use sign language have fewer incidents of unwanted habits.
Teaching a child to sign, will help them become more expressive, and help them to tell another child, teacher, or other adult, what they want, and why they are upset.
Here are some tips for Signing in Childcare Settings
• Signing helps to lower noise levels in preschool classrooms by reducing frustrated screaming and crying. Children spend less time crying and teachers spend less time playing “the guessing game,” allowing more time for positive interaction.
• Signing gives children with special needs the opportunity to interact in a meaningful way with typically developing children. Acceptance of children with special needs is greatly enhanced.
• Signing serves as a “language bridge” for children and staff who speak different languagess-the ign is the same for eat (English) as it is comer (Spanish).
• Signing empowers children because they can communicate successfully with those around them. This sense of empowerment significantly contributes to babies’ happiness.
•Signing enhances early language skills because children can engage in two-way conversations with their teachers and their peers at an earlier age.
• Signing helps children solve problems. STOP and SHARE are commonly used signs that help children learn to get along with one another. Signing significantly reduces problems with biting. Take away the frustration and biting goes with it.
• Signing enables children to control the topic of conversation and express their unique interests at an earlier age. This allows teachers to design activities that will enhance children’s specific interests.
• Signing adds fun to daily routines and circle time and music activities.
• Signing facilitates home-school communication and helps parents get more involved in preschool curriculum in a more meaningful way.
• Signing is appropriate for all preschool age groups (infants, toddlers, preschool, Pre-K) and it facilitates visual/kinesthetic learning.
• Signing in preschool classrooms has been shown to enhance literacy skills needed for school success: reading, vocabulary, and spelling.

Downtown Summerlin Grand Opening
Did you check out the Grand Opening of Downtown Summerlin this weekend?
I took 3 of my 4 kids to enjoy the festivities and we had an amazing time. There were food trucks, giveaways, free samples, tons of places to eat, beautiful landscaping, music, fashion shows and more.
It was a great place to take the family, walk around and enjoy the brand new Downtown. I may even want to move to Summerlin and fully enjoy its beauty.
The kids obviously had an amazing time:
If you stopped by, let me know what you thought!

It's that time of year again! As you recall, Last year, shortly after moving to Las Vegas, I volunteered for and blogged about the Life Is Beautiful Festival.
Held in beautiful Downtown Las Vegas, there were blocks and blocks of music, art, food and more! Being only 2 days long last year, they upped it to 3 days for 2014.
Once again I will be volunteering as well as enjoying the festivities all 3 days.
This year's lineup, chefs, food vendors and educational speakers will prove to be even better than 2013!
So come to Downtown Las Vegas and join the party! Check out their Facebook for more information!

Actors Anonymous: A Review
Author: James Franco
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company
Pages: 286
Format: hardback
ISBN: 0544114531
GTIN: 09780544114531
I will admit. I purchased this book because I used to be a stage actress when I was younger. And I miss it…a lot! I admire most those actors/actresses that are true to themselves, don’t lose themselves in the money they make/fame they receive and are real, genuine human beings who are not afraid to tell it like it is.
James Franco is one of those people.
In the beginning of the book is listed the 12 Steps Of Actors Anonymous. In essence, 12 steps to being a true to yourself actor/entertainer/person.
My favorite quote in the book explains it all:
James tells a lot of his history, from childhood until he reached Los Angeles in 1996. In between the biography is all look inward. Who are you? Where do you want to be? And where are you going? Even if you are not, or never have been, an actor, these all can apply to something in your life. They make amazingly perfect sense. If they don’t, you may be doing something wrong.
Throughout the book are short stories that tell of success, failure, of hard work and much more. You’ll have to read it to truly understand everything. Each person has an amazing story to tell and a great message behind each one. At least one of them I am sure you, as the reader, will relate to. If not all.
In essence, this book is about honesty, what Hollywood is really like, not how it is portrayed on television, with a lot of amazing humor sprinkled heavily throughout the book. It is a book that essentially brings of to the realization that we create our own roles in life and that we can change them, for better or for worse, at any stage in our lives. That what you are doing now is not all their is left to life. There is a whole other world out there. And that we need to give ourselves over to and improve your conscious contact with “The Great Director.”
The second half of the book is about The Twelve Traditions of Actors Anonymous. Unity, leadership, reality, autonomy, communication and more, making sure that there is a sense of oneness within the acting community which also helps to protect privacy where privacy should be protected and keep a sense of reality throughout their lives. And masks: what masks do you wear? Why? And for what purposes.
James talks about reasoning. Why are you doing what you are doing? From what I got out of this, if you are only doing what you are doing for the money and not because you love your job, whatever that may be, then perhaps you should reevaluate and start doing something you love, even if it is just a back up plan.
There is a quote in there that is very true to life: “You’re on set, there’s a script, but there are no lines; you have a character, but that character can change if you want, you can change your character…” If there is anything you take away from this, it should be that, no matter where you come from or what you are currently doing, YOU have the ability to change, if that is what you want to do. And don’t be afraid of change. Your conscious audience is watching.
There is nothing boring about this book. It will make you laugh, cry, think and even reminissce about your life and perhaps even make you want to be a better person. No matter what you may be doing at this point in time.
As the Great Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage.” Now go, read this very well thought out and extremely well written book and find your true role in the great production of life!

Kindergarten Is Around The Corner! What Your Child Should Know!
School is fast approaching, or already in session for some...so here are some tips about what your child should know before they enter Kindergarten, to make their and the teachers jobs much easier, and to help your child succeed!
As an early childhood educator, it saddens me to see many 3 and 4 year olds who are not even close to being prepared for Kindergarten. So may parents rely too much on their day care or preschool to teach their children, and, when they don't do an adequate job, the parents get upset.
Problem there is, parents are a child's first teachers, and what is learned at school, should be enforced at home. This is very important for a child's future school career. A 3 and 4 year old child needs to be prepared for the competition ahead of them throughout their schooling.
More importantly, education starts at birth. The moment your baby is born, is when they should start learning about their world...talk to them about colors, textures, smells, and do forth. Signing and reading are both excellent ways to help your child start to understand their world.
These tips were given to me by a fellow mom and Kindergarten teacher who says every year she needs to hold kids back because of their lack of skills, and that any TYPICALLY developing child should be able to do these things by age 5.
By four years of age (or sooner), a typically developing child should be able to:
- write their full name
- count to and write numbers 1-20 and possibly more
- say, write, and recognize all 26 letters of the alphabet
- know their address, phone number, and parents names
- drink from a regular cup
- go to the bathroom on their own
- recite the days of the week
- recite the months of the year
- dress themselves
- brush their own teeth
- know how to share and take turns without whining or arguments
- shapes/sizes
- colors
- reading at least 100 basic Dolce sight words (2 and 3 letter words)
- do a 100 piece puzzle by themselves
- know how to follow rules
- walk in lines
- sit at a desk (unless, of course, you are sending them to Montessori or the like)
- understand simple concepts (yesterday, tomorrow, night, day, today)
- hold a writing utensil the correct way
- color inside the lines
- basic letter phonics
- retell a story
- know the main parts to a story and the main characters
- know how to keep their space neat and organized, and take care of their own belongings
- separate from their parents with no crying or fussing
- pay attention for up to 30 minutes in a lesson or activity
- cut a straight line with scissors
Many of these can be taught through songs and fingerplays, signing and more! You do not need to sit down with a workbook or at a desk, there are many ways to teach your child!!
That is the basics they should know before kindergarten! PLEASE help your child know these concepts. When a child does not know basic concepts entering Kindergarten, it hinders the teachers ability to teach the rest of the class. It may actually hold the class back, which will not properly prepare them for 1st grade (and so on). This is a highly competitive world, and we want our children to succeed!

Hemlock Grove Season 2 Premier
On July 11, I was invited to Los Angeles to the Hemlock Grove Season 2 Premier. It was the first premier I was invited to and I was quite excited. I had watched the show from day 1 as well as running a pretty amazing page for one of the main actors, Bill Skarsgård who plays Roman Godfrey.
Hemlock Grove also let us give out 40 pairs of tickets to random lucky page fans. That was one of the best parts, it was like giving away Christmas presents.
My friend and fellow page admin, Khelsey, rode with me from Vegas to LA. It was a fun 4 hour ride. The ride to LA from Vegas is always beautiful and I love going, alone or otherwise. Excitement built as we approached LA.
We met a couple people that are fans of our page and big Hemlock Grove supporters and had lunch with them at Jack In The Box, across from the Archlight Theater, where the premier was to be held.
The premier started at 7. There were a ton of people, which made me happy, seeing that Hemlock Grove is a smaller Netflix based series. Even though the director is the amazing Master of Horror, Eli Roth.
We got our free soda and popcorn and headed into the theater. We were greeted by #HemlockGrove on the big screen. This would be the first time I have ever seen a TV show, up on a theater screen.
A few guests had come in, saying they were getting pictures with the cast, including Bill, outside the room. At first, I didn't want to go out there and bother them (yes, I am weird like that) but my friends dragged me out and made me. Not that I complained. We were walking out as Bill was walking into the room and we asked him for pictures. He graciously accepted. My friend told him who I was/what page I ran and, thanks to the amazing Joel de la Fuente, he knew exactly who I was. I think I may have done somersaults on the inside. We got pictures, he made me crack up, we talked, I got an autograph and then we went back into the theater.
I had wandered up to the VIP section, where the cast and crew were to sit. Right as I was being told to "get out" so to speak, Mr. de la Fuente, AKA Dr. Johan Pryce, came up and told me I was "good" and I got pictures with him and Master Eli. Why I didn't get a picture with Medeline, AKA Miranda. I should have. she is also a sweetheart. Of course, they all were.
The first episode was amazing. It was wonderful seeing this amazing cast all on the big screen together.
After the episode ended, I tried to get a picture and autograph with Landon (he is in the same magazine issue of Hero as Bill) and Famke, but they were whisked off quickly. I did, however, get to talk to Joel more as well as get a picture with the with the beautiful Tiio Horn, AKA Destiny Rumancek.
After the premier was over we went to In N Out and then headed home to Vegas. After all was said and done, and I was finally home at 5am, it was the most amazing day of my life. After meeting the cast and seeing how wonderful they all are, I will forever support everything they do/are in, in the future.
Here's to an amazing Season 3!

It’s been three years since Holt Maddox disappeared from and oral Springs and out of Niki Stringer’s life without a trace. Then one night while sitting in her favorite bar, there he was. What was he doing back here? Why did he bring his dog to her vet clinic? And what was his explanation for three years of no calls, no emails and no trace of him what so ever?
Holt, a bounty hunter and Niki, a Veterinarian, met three years ago and it soon turned into a beautiful yet mysterious love affair. After his disappearance Niki moved on with her life, becoming head vet and trying to put her past where it belonged. Until Holt showed up again and turned her world upside down.
No matter how hard Niki tries, she just can not push Holt out of her life. But Niki soon leanrs that not everything is as it seems. She receives a phone call about her former boss that makes her question Holt’s intentions, as well as the real whereabouts of her former boss, whom she has not heard from since she replaced him.
Is Holt really there for her? Did he have other intentions…and will Niki be the one hurt in all of this?
This was an amazing book and I can not wait to read the rest of Niki and Holt’s story!
The author was amazing enough to answer some of my questions:
Thanks Becka for taking the time to read Shifting Gears and I’m honored to do an interview for you. I ‘m glad you enjoyed it! I’m attaching a pic of me as well as an image of the front cover and a pic of the inspiration behind Holt Maddox. Use whatever you need :-)…If you need anything else from me just let me know! Thanks Becka!
What or who gave you the inspiration to write?
I started writing in elementary school. Haiku poems were my first love. Then on to short stories and when I was a teenager I wrote my first what would now be considered a young adult novella. My English teachers and journalism teacher in school kept the passion alive within me to write as they commended me on my creations. In my adult life such authors as Kristen Ashley and Michelle Valentine inspired me to get back to the pen with the characters I had created in my head who always seemed to be lurking around. Their writing has had a profound influence in the subject matter I choose to write about and the style of writing that I have made my own.
Why this genre?
I can tell you I personally enjoy reading in the New Adult genre and Romance period has been a favorite of mine since my teens. Guess it makes sense that the characters bee bopping along on the yellow brick road that is my mind would fit in these genres.
Was your family supportive during your journey?
Well….They absolutely were….BUT….you knew there had to be a BUT in there….It’s been challenging. I work a full time job, only to come home to be a full time mother to two beautiful amazing children. I’ve had to adjust my lifestyle as well as make some sacrifices along the way so I’m not going to lie there were some hairy times when I was in the “writing zone” or in the much dreaded “editing zone.” Overall I had their support and love and I thank them ever so much.
Will there be a sequel?
You know it! Gaining Ground is in the works right now and will complete the story of Holt and Niki. I will tell you however that Holt and Niki will be “popping up” in future stories with characters from their story that will have their own books…hint hint…Jax…
Did the book end up the way you wanted, or did it change as you went along?
I giggle as I read this question. I had so much fun writing Shifting Gears. But I’m sooooooooooo not an outliner. Because of that I had no flipping clue what was going to happen next. Sometimes I was taken back at what was happening as I wrote. I can remember once having to shut my laptop in anger at one of the characters (yes Holt) I can also remember having a perfect view of how a scene was going to play out but as I got into it the outcome was a three sixty of the vision I had in my head. Holt and Niki, they are tricky little devils that keep me guessing until the last minute. I’m all about a HEA however so I can only HOPE they cooperate with me in the conclusion of their story.

JERRY’S NUGGET CASINO TO DONATE PROCEEDS DURING NATIONAL CHOCOLATE ÉCLAIR DAY JUNE 22
Las Vegas — Jerry’s Nugget Casino will commemorate National Chocolate Éclair Day with an “Éclairs for a Cause” event on Sunday, June 22, with 100% of the day’s sales of éclairs donated to Susan G. Komen® of Southern Nevada.
A single éclair consists of 1 ½ cups of Bavarian cream.
The word “éclair” is derived from the French word meaning “flash of lightning.” A staple dessert of Jerry’s Famous Coffee Shop, the éclair is a childhood favorite treat of Jerry’s Nugget Executive Director, Angelo Stamis.
A cream-filled pastry that is covered in smooth chocolate, an éclair is generally an oblong shape. The dough is baked until it is crisp and hollowed inside and once cooled, is filled with a flavored custard or cream and then iced with chocolate.
Awaken your inner chocoholic and enjoy your éclair! Feel free to #NationalEclairDay, post and tag Jerry’s Nugget on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram at @JerrysNuggetLV, YouTube and Pinterest. For additional information, please visit jerrysnugget.com.
